Intellectual Wellness

The process of using your mind to develop a greater understanding of yourself, others, and the world around you.

It’s not just about learning “book smarts,” it’s about life-long learning.  To achieve intellectual well-being, we can:

  • Read a book for fun
  • Make rational, logical decisions
  • Think before reacting to situations
  • Learn more about our interests and hobbies
  • Develop critical thinking skills
  • Consider the impact we each can have on the world
  • Keep up on global events
  • Not judge people by their circumstances
  • Try new things
  • Discuss the news with friends
  • Listen to National Public Radio (NPR)… or as my nerdier friends call it: National Professor Radio
  • Debate
  • Listen to a book on tape/CD when taking long trips
  • Take a college class for personal enrichment, regardless of your age
  • Write or e-mail a friend or penpal in another part of the world to learn about other cultures
  • Read the directions, even if you choose to ignore them!
  • Learn what all of your “numbers” mean… cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, BP, RR, etc.
  • Ask questions!
  • Read to your children at a very early age
  • Record those family recipes for the best cookies anyone has ever tasted… be sure those recipes become part of your family’s heritage
